Holme Junior & Infant School

Class 2

Welcome!

Currently, we are made up of 18 ambitious children in Year 3, 4, 5 and 6. Mrs Broughton and Mrs Guest are our current Class Teachers. During the morning, LKS2 and UKS2 are split into two or three groups to focus on reading, writing and mathematics. This means the class sizes are small and teachers have a generous amount of time to dedicate to giving the children the instruction and feedback that will help them move on in their learning.

Feel free to catch us on the door, email via the school office or arrange a telephone call, if you have any questions. We are always more than happy to help!

Learning this term

Our project this term is 'Groundbreaking Greeks'.

Children will delve into the rich tapestry of Ancient Greece, exploring its vast territories from the Greek mainland to its far-reaching colonies across the Mediterranean. They will discover influential figures like the philosophers Socrates and Plato, and the conqueror Alexander the Great, learning about their significant contributions to Western civilization. The curriculum also examines the complex social structures and gender roles prevalent during this era, revealing the limitations placed on women and the societal hierarchy. Furthermore, students will study the pivotal roles of city-states such as Athens and Sparta in developing early democratic principles, artistic endeavours, and scientific advancements. This educational journey will highlight how Ancient Greece's pioneering efforts in democracy, philosophy, and the arts laid the essential foundations for modern Western culture.

Important Information

Reading

We are passionate about developing life-long readers. We will ensure that all KS2 children will have weekly access to our school library, where they can swap their reading books. In school, your child will be read with at least once a week by an adult. Please ensure that your child is reading little but often at home, as well as in school. We encourage you (or your child) to sign their Reading Records to indicate that they have read at home, either with an adult or independently. Please aim to sign your Reading Record at least X3 weekly

Spellings/Homework

Spelling is taught through the Spelling Shed scheme and children use the app to practise every week for homework. Phonics are also revised in Year 3 and when children require a recap! Each Monday, your child will be tested on their spellings and they will be given their new spellings/homework. Please ensure that your child has handed in their homework to be marked.

P.E.

Our PE day is Monday. Children should come to school wearing their P.E. kit. On Wednesday, children need to bring their swimming kit.
