Holme Junior & Infant School

Our School Curriculum

We offer a rich, exciting and ambitious curriculum with a focus on developing skills, acquiring knowledge and deepening understanding. Children have the opportunity to work independently, in pairs and in groups. We plan special events, including themed weeks and days; inviting visitors into school and taking children out of school to extend their learning further. We give pupils the opportunity to discover and develop their talents.

During the first year at school children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage framework (EYFS), experiencing learning opportunities including play activities inside and outside the classroom. From the beginning of Year 1, all children follow the National Curriculum guidelines, studying the core subjects (English, Maths and Science) and Foundation Subjects (Computing, History, Geography, Design and Technology, Art and Design, Music, PHSE, PE and French in Key Stage 2). We follow the locally agreed syllabus for RE. Wherever possible, meaningful links are made between subjects in order to provide a thematic, creative approach and to give learning a context. Themes are planned on a cycle to ensure a breadth of coverage, but planning also takes into account children’s interests and experiences.

Computing is used to enhance learning throughout the curriculum. English is taught daily, with a strong focus on learning phonics in the first few years. Frequent opportunities are given for speaking, listening, drama and reading, which enable the children to become proficient writers. Maths is taught daily, including a short time spent every day practising mental maths skills. Further details of our curriculum are available on our curriculum subject pages. If you wish to find out more about the curriculum the school is covering, please address questions for Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 to Miss Wood, and all other years to Mrs Broughton or Mrs Guest.

Long Term Plans

Please note that Class 1 runs from Cycle A - C and Class 2 runs from Cycle A - D.
